OLD BACKUP

I found an old wallet backup

Identify the original software and preserve the backup before attempting to open, convert or restore it.

01

Keep the context with the file

A wallet backup is more useful when its origin is known. Record the device it came from, its original folder, the filename and the wallet software you remember. Keep related files together. A filename such as wallet.dat is a clue, not proof of the application or the file’s integrity.

Work from a copy. Avoid uploading the backup to online file-identification sites or opening it in software found through advertisements. A file that might contain keys deserves the same care as the wallet itself.

02

Match the recovery instructions to the format

Start with the project that created the backup. Bitcoin Core documents a wallet-specific backup operation; Electrum documents its own recovery behavior. Do not combine instructions from unrelated wallets or rename an unfamiliar export to make it resemble another format.

  • Bitcoin Core backup: establish the creating version and wallet type before planning a restore.
  • Electrum backup: determine whether you have a wallet file, a seed or a watch-only wallet.
  • MultiBit backup: distinguish Classic files from HD recovery material. The related KeychainX MultiBit resource explains that distinction.

The Bitcoin Core 30.0 backupwallet reference is version-specific; it is not a universal restoration command for every old backup.

03

Describe it without attaching it

For an initial enquiry, share the wallet name if known, approximate date, file extension and whether the original device still works. Do not attach the wallet or disclose private keys. Keep an untouched copy until the recovery method has been agreed.

If the drive itself is failing, the immediate problem is preservation. Follow the damaged-device guide before experimenting with wallet software.
