PASSWORD

I forgot my wallet password

Separate an encrypted wallet password from an account login, device PIN or seed passphrase.

By KeychainX · Updated 19 September 2026

01

Identify what is asking for the password

Write down the exact application and the action that triggers the prompt. Opening a desktop wallet, unlocking a hardware device and signing into an exchange are different problems. An exchange account has a provider; a self-custody wallet may have no password-reset service.

Keep a private record of the app name, device, approximate setup date and the wording of the error. Do not reset the device or replace the wallet file just to get past the prompt. First establish what backup exists.

02

Preserve the file and your memories

  • Keep the original backup unchanged. Use a separate working copy for any investigation.
  • Record what you remember about the password privately: likely length, language, capitalization and meaningful fragments.
  • Keep distinct hypotheses separate. Do not put real guesses into an email, public forum or online checker.

A candidate search can help when enough of a password is remembered and the file format is supported. It is not a universal way to defeat strong encryption. The BTCRecover project describes its supported recovery types and limitations.

03

Choose a bounded next step

If you want to understand candidate searches, our related Gurnec practice laboratory uses invented data and needs no real wallet. Those exercises teach candidate generation; they do not predict whether your particular wallet can be recovered.

For assistance, send KeychainX the application name, general backup type and a description of the problem. Keep the actual password hints and wallet file out of the initial email. The first task is to identify an appropriate recovery approach, not to guess a success rate.
